Thar She Blows! 'The Sea Beast' Teaser Trailer Surfaces

reputation for allowing animation filmmakers considerable creative freedom has helped lure some of the foremost talents in the industry. Big names such as Henry Selick, Guillermo Del Toro, Matt Groening and Jorge Guiterrez have set up their new projects at the streamer.  As has Chris Williams, director of Big Hero 6 and co-director of Moana, who left Disney behind, bringing his new film The Sea Beast to Netflix Animation.

After the briefest of glimpses in the recent 2022 movie preview video, we now have our first proper look at the film in the debut teaser trailer.

And mighty impressive is looks too, and quite distinct from Williams' work at the House Of Mouse. Set in the age of exploration, it features a young stowaway named Maisie Brumble who sneaks aboard the ship of the famed monster hunter Jacob Hunter

It's looking set to be an epic adventure, with Jacob and Maisie forming an unlikely alliance and encountering creatures both big and small. The full-size sea monsters look suitably imposing, and Jacob's leap towards the jaws of one particularly impressive specimen makes for some spectacular imagery.

We're betting that that particular creature is the beastie of the title, as it features more than any other. The first synopsis told us that Masie ends up befriending "the most dangerous beast of them all", but it looks like they're holding that back for future trailers. This teaser is concerned with making us realise just how imposing and fearsome these monsters are.

The Sea Beast is written and directed by Chris Williams and stars the voices of  Karl Urban, Zaris-Angel Hator, Jared Harris, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Dan Stevens and Kathy Burke.

The film is due to set sail on Netflix everywhere on July 8.  We're hoping Netflix will also give it some sort of cinema release- as this looks like it will benefit from being seen on the biggest screen possible.

Check out the trailer, below along with some first-look images!
