Annecy Reveals Feature Film Line-Up and More


The Annecy International Animation Festival has, over the past couple of months, been gradually revealing this year's selection. We've already discovered the short films, TV films commissioned films and student films that will screen in competition this June. Now we reach the climax as the highest profile category of all was announced- the feature films. Announced during the annual press conference, the features include films screening both in and out of competition.

In competition films include Flow, from Away's Gints Zilbalodis,  Ghost Cat Anzu, Naoko Yamada's The Colours Within,  Sauvages from My Life As A Corgette's Claude Barras, Memoir Of A Snail from Mary and Max director Adam Elliot and Studio Ponoc's The Imaginary. Titles screening in the Contrechamp competition include Filipino LGBT headscratcher The Missing, South Korea's Gill, Brazil's Our Crazy Love, Pakistan's The Glassworker and Japan's The Birth Of Kitaro: The Mystery of GeGeGe.

Screening out of competition in the new Annecy Presents category titles include Sand Land, created by the late great Akira Toriyama, The Garfield Movie, Detective Conan: The Million Dollar Pentagram, Extinction,  The Sloth Lane and Kickstarter-funded feature The World's Divide.

Screening Events include The Netflix Animation Showcase, Despicable Me 4, Ultraman Rising, Inside Out 2 and Transformers One, plus early looks at Moana 2 and Asterix & Obelix- The Big Fight.

It was revealed that the 2024 festival will kick off with the screening of The Most Precious Cargoes, directed by Michel Hazanavicius best known for the Oscar-winning The Artist. Making-Of sessions were also announced for Big Mouth, Arcane and The Legends Of Paris: a Tale Of The 19th Century.

Four special guests were also announced. Attending the festival this year will be former Monty Python animator turned film director Terry Gilliam,  Alan Chabat, director of the upcoming Asterix & Obelix- The Big Fight series for Netflix, Regina Pessosa, designer of this year's poster and filmmaking icon Wes Anderson. Anderson, Gilliam and Pessosa will present masterclasses and Gilliam will be presented with an honourary Cristal for lifetime achievement.  More programme details can be found on the festival website.
