[SDCC] Critical Role: Vox Machina Gets 5th and Final Season, New Spin-Off Announced
Critical Role is an unlikely success story. Who would have thought a bunch of voice actors playing Dungeons and Dragons during their off-time would be popular? And that it would spawn a successful animated series? But that's just what happened with Critical Role: The Legend Of Vox Machina, which has been running for several seasons on Prime Video.
The Critical Role team were in San Diego for their annual Comic Con panel. And they had some pretty major news. The fourth season of the show has not even aired yet, but the panel confirmed that the series has been renewed for a fifth season. But it comes with a caveat- the fifth season will be the show's last. With two full seasons of episodes still to air, there's a lot of Vox Machina fun still to be had, but it's understandable that fans would be disappointed.
This isn't the end of the story, however. Not only will the adventures of Vox Machina live on in other media, but there's a new follow-up show coming soon. The Mighty Nein focuses on Critical Role's second campaign, and follows a new group of adventurers that deal with various dangers, evil-doers and existential threats to the fantasy world of Exandria.
The Mighty Nein, like its predecessor, is produced by Critical Role, Amazon MGM Studios and Titmouse. The series will premiere on November 19 in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.
The series will feature Critical Role founders and original cast members Laura Bailey, Taliesin Jaffe, Ashley Johnson, Liam O'Brien, Matthew Mercer, Marisha Ray, Sam Reigel and Travis Willingham.
During the panel, attendees were shown character artwork and first-look footage. An extensive line-up of guest stars was also unveiled. They included Mark Strong, Alan Cumming, Tim McGraw, Anika Noni Rose, Ming-Na Wen, Auli’i Cravalho, Rahul Kohli, Robbie Daymond and Johnathan Frakes.
The series follows a gang of fugitives and outcasts, bound by secrets and scars. But when a powerful arcane relic called The Beacon falls into dangerous hands, they must learn to work together to save the realm and reality itself. A first-look clip was revealed, which you can check out below.
The Critical Role cast serve as executive producers alongside Tasha Huo (Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft), who also serves as showrunner, Chris Prynoski (Metalocalypse), Shannon Prynoski (Fairfax), Antonio Canobbio (Star Trek: Lower Decks) and Ben Kalina (Big Mouth).
Season four of The Legend Of Vox Machina is expected to air in 2026.
