As we approach the end of the year, that means we're getting ready to enter another awards season. People's thoughts are turning to what might win a shiny trophy at various awards ceremonies. And of course, that includes Best Animated Feature and Best Animated Short categories.
While they may not be what they once were The Oscars are still the highest profile and most prestigious Awards in town. The Academy has this week released the longlist of shorts that have qualified for the Best Animated Short category.
Of the over 100 films on the list, it includes Cardboard by JP Vine and Two Black Boys In Paradise from Baz Sells, both of whom feature in our AFA Podcast Manchester Animation Festival Special. It also includes Cartoon Saloon's Eiru, the award-winning Forevergreen, The NFB's The Girl Who Cried Pearls, Ovary-Acting, Aaron Blaise's Snow Bear and Dreamworks' Wednesdays With Gramps.
The list features films that have qualified, either by having theatrical screenings or by winning a prize at an Oscar-qualifying festival such as Sundance, Annecy, Animation Dingle and Manchester Animation Festival.
The list will be whittled down to a 15-film short list that will be announced on December 16. The preliminary round of Oscar voting runs from December 8- 12.
