K-Pop Demon Hunters 2 Set For 2029

K-Pop Demon Hunters is the global animation phenomenon of the year. Despite being streaming only, the movie's popularity has only continued to grow, eventually storming its way to becoming Netflix's most streamed movie of all time. Its cultural impact has been huge too, with songs from its soundtrack becoming hits around the world, and scoring three nominations at the upcoming Grammy Awards.

With such unexpected success, it's unsurprising that Netflix wanted a sequel. While there were rumours that they and producers Sony Pictures Animation were in talks, it now appears that the two parties have come to an agreement. But fans are going to have to wait for quite a while, as the sequel isn't due out until 2029. This reflects the long production cycle of a high-end animation feature (see also the long wait for Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse), and also probably the fact the film's success was somewhat unexpected.

Directors Maggie Kang and Chris Applehans are thought to be in talks to return. There's no talk of returning voice actors and singers yet, but we'd be surprised if at least the principals don't return.

K-Pop Demon Hunters was produced by Sony Pictures Animation and released exclusively by Netflix. In an unusual move, Netflix even brought the film to cinemas (in Sing-Along edition) for a limited time in August and over Halloween.

The film follows the K-Pop girlband Huntr/x, who moonlight as demon hunters. But they must come together to face their biggest challenge yet- a rival boyband who are really demons in disguise.

The film is directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, with a script penned by Danya Jimenez, Hannah McMechan, Kang, and Appelhans. The voice cast features Arden Cho, May Hong, Ji-young Yoo, Ahn Hyo-seop, Yunjin Kim, Joel Kim Booster, Liza Koshy, Daniel Dae Kim, Ken Jeong, and Byung Hun Lee.

It features original songs performed by EJAE, AUDREY NUNA, REI AMI, Andrew Choi, Danny Chung, Kevin Woo, samUIL Lee, Neckwav, and Lea Salonga.

With all other details (plot, casting, musical collaborators) it's too early to say for K-Pop Demon Hunters 2, but stay tuned for more news as we get it!
