Sekiro : Shadows Die Twice Anime Adaptation Announced
There is a long tradition of anime based on video games. And unlike their Hollywood counterparts, they don't have a bad reputation, with some from Street Fighter II to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners considered classics. During the opening night at Gamescom 2025 a new anime was revealed by Kadokawa, Crunchyroll, Qzil.la, and ARCH. Sekiro: No Defeat is a hand-drawn adaptation of FromSoftware's Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. The series will be streamed exclusively on Crunchyroll worldwide, excluding Japan, China, Korea, Russia and Belarus. The game was originally released in 2019 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows, and has sold more than 10 million copies to date.
The series is said to be crafted with reverence for the original. Sekiro: No Defeat is a direct adaptation of the game's original story, a tale of loyalty and blood, set in a fantastical reimagining of Japan's Sengoku era.
"We are taking on the monumental task of animating the breathtakingly beautiful Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. In doing so, we are pouring every ounce of our artistic vision and passion for beauty into its production,” said Kenichi Kutsuna, director of the adaptation. “The final product is being crafted to be a truly memorable experience, one that will leave a lasting impression on both dedicated fans of the game and those who are discovering the world of Sekiro for the very first time. Please look forward to it."
“Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is a game known for its precision and intensity, and those qualities carry through beautifully in this adaptation,” said Asa Suehira, Chief Content Officer at Crunchyroll. “We’re excited to bring Sekiro: No Defeat to fans around the world, and honoured to work alongside Kadokawa, Qzil.la, and ARCH to expand this iconic story through the medium of anime.”
The series is directed by Kenichi Kutsuna and written by Takuya Satou. Shunsuke Fukui is the deputy director. Character designs are provided by Takahiro Kishida. Kaito Moki is Chief Animation Director and Takashi Mukoda is action animation director. Yuji Kaneko is Art Director. Animation production is by Qzil.la, and ARCH.
The voice cast features Daisuke Namikawa as Wolf, Miyuki Satou as Kuro/The Divine Heir and Genichiro Ashina as Kenjiro Tsuda, all reprising their roles from the original game.
Sekiro: No Defeat will be released on Crunchyroll sometime during 2026. Check out the trailer below.
